sap(e) feat. bernhard günter

The music improvised by SAP(e) is entirely centred around a certain ideal of the listening experience.
What this ideal means is basically a total belief in the sonic experience as a perception. Music is not made to be functional; it does not have to fulfil any spiritual or physical needs, apart from what is really heard. What is heard is what only matter. In this aspect, our music is not by any means conceptual, nor it is only emotional. Our music only exist in the perception of the listener, there is nothing else. The perception is the place where occurs the imagination, the sensibility, in other words the music.

Being obsessed by what is perceived when we play, it became quite logical then that we are also obsessed with dramaturgy. We are playing some kind of restricted sonic landscapes at low volume in a very minimal way, but we are not playing drone. We are improvising music that always seeks to match a certain formal accomplishment, which –basically- tries to go somewhere. Needless to say that it doesn't always work perfectly, this is improvised, thus imperfect. Finally, the recording is a capture of a moment; it has to be considered as this, no more no less.

LOOP

Sap(e), "Improvisation", Etlefeucomme Netlabel, 2009

Sap(e) is a French and German outfit whose members are Aurélien Besnard, clarinet, Christophe Devaux on electric guitar and Guillaume Contré on laptop.
Also is featured Bernhard Günter on pocket trumpet and clarinet, effects.
“Improvisation” is released on the Belgian Etlefeucomme Netlabel and it is a one piece only of 28 minutes long. It's a combination of acoustic, electronic instruments and computer generated sounds.
The atmosphere is full of tension and silence in between, the clarinet and the pocket trumpet interweave a noisy language while twang guitar offers sustained vibrations.
This work recalls me the work of For4Ears's label artists.

TEMPORARY FAULT

SAP(e) featuring BERNHARD GÜNTER – Improvisation

The trio of Aurélien Besnard (clarinet), Christophe Devaux (electric guitar) and Guillaume Contré (laptop) moves around the regions where concentrated instrumental tampering borders with micro-sonic extemporaneity; that's why the presence of Günter – here on pocket trumpet, clarinet and effects – appears as virtually perfect for the occasion. The interchange between the artists is informed by a constant impression of unexploded intensity, mainly characterized by timbres seemingly unwilling to depart from the grey area between corroded metal and suburban dimness. The only instantly identifiable voice comes from Devaux's intimately miked strings, from which knotty snippets, luminescent oxidation and quiet drainage raise their small heads amidst brain-cuddling longer tones emitted by the reeds. The computer's activities are clearly discernible but not overstated, the lone exception a looped fragment that disappears ten seconds after having entered the audio frame. An odd sense of organic liquidness permeates a sizeable part of this appealing work, whose persuasiveness ultimately resides in its capacity of holding our concentration in a grip without pauses, halfway through tangible matter and sinister reflectivity.
